What’s the Difference Between Seasonal and Permanent Lighting?

People use the phrase outdoor lighting to mean two very different things. One is a temporary display that goes up for a season and comes down after it. The other is a fixed architectural system that lives on your home all year. Understanding how each is actually built makes the choice between them obvious.

Seasonal Lighting: Built to Come Down

A seasonal display is temporary by design. Strands of commercial grade bulbs are cut and clipped to your rooflines, wrapped around columns and trees, and connected to timers for the weeks you want them lit. When the season ends, all of it comes off.

The product is chosen for how it looks during those weeks and for how cleanly it can be removed afterward. Clips attach to shingles and gutters without fasteners into the structure, and cords are routed to stay out of sight. It is a full display that leaves no trace in January.

Permanent Lighting: Built to Stay

Permanent outdoor lighting is a different category of product. Small LED diodes are set into a track that is mounted along the eaves, peaks and architectural lines of the home, and it stays there.

The track is color matched and installed tight to the trim, which is why a well fitted system is essentially invisible from the street in daylight. At night it can be anything you want it to be. The system runs from an app on your phone, and New Age Lights systems offer over sixteen million color combinations, so the same track that does warm white on an ordinary Tuesday does red and green in December.

With permanent lighting, the ongoing ask is even smaller. Once the system is on the house, changing your display is a matter of opening an app. There is no install date to schedule, no takedown to book, and nothing to store.

Which One Fits Your Property

Seasonal lighting makes sense if you love a traditional holiday look, want garland, wreaths and wrapped trees as part of the picture, or prefer a display that is only there when the season calls for it.

Permanent lighting makes sense if you are tired of the annual cycle, want lighting you can use the other eleven months of the year, or want accent and security lighting that also happens to do the holidays. Plenty of homeowners run both, using a permanent system on the architecture and seasonal work on the landscape.
