Nearly every do it yourself display runs into the same short list of problems. None of them are about effort. They are about product, measurement and technique, and each one is avoidable once you know it exists.
Mistake 1: Using the Wrong Product Outdoors
Indoor rated strands, indoor extension cords and unrated connections end up outside every year. They are not built for moisture, freezing temperatures or ultraviolet exposure, and they fail in exactly the conditions a holiday display has to survive.
The related error is buying a fresh set of retail strands each season and mixing them with last year’s. Bulb color and brightness drift between production runs, so a roofline assembled over three years rarely matches itself.

Mistake 2: Overloading the Circuit
Strands are daisy chained until something trips, and the usual fix is moving a cord to a different outlet until it stops tripping. That treats the symptom. Most homes have a limited number of exterior circuits, and a full display can exceed what one of them will carry.
Beyond the nuisance of a dark section on a cold night, overloaded circuits and chained extension cords are a genuine fire and shock hazard outdoors.

Mistake 3: Staples, Nails and Screws
Fastening lights by driving staples or nails into shingles, fascia and trim is the most expensive mistake on this list. Every penetration in a roof surface is a potential water entry point, and damage often does not show up until months later as a stain on a ceiling.
Clips exist for every surface: shingle clips, gutter clips, shingle tab clips, and clips for brick and siding that do not require fasteners into the structure.
How we avoid it: the right clip for each surface, no fasteners into the roof, and clean removal at the end of the season.
Mistake 4: Guessing at Measurements
Fixed length retail strands almost never match a roofline. The result is a gap at one corner, a doubled up run at another, and bulb spacing that changes partway across the house.
The same problem shows up in reverse on trees. Homeowners consistently underestimate how much product a mature trunk or canopy takes, so wraps end up thin and uneven.
How we avoid it: the property is measured first and product is cut to those measurements, so every run ends exactly where the architecture does.
Mistake 5: The Ladder
The most serious mistake is the one people treat most casually. Ladders get set at the wrong angle, placed on soft or uneven ground, leaned against gutters that were never meant to carry weight, or used to reach sideways instead of being repositioned.
Add cold hands, wet leaves, frost on the roof and fading afternoon light, and the conditions during holiday installation are the worst of the year for this work.
