Modern permanent outdoor lighting systems are built to handle 90% humidity, 95°F heat, thunderstorms with 60 mph gusts, hail, and freezing winter conditions — all within a single calendar year. IP67-rated fixtures, UV-stabilized track, fully sealed low-voltage wiring, and outdoor-rated transformer cabinets deliver a 15–25 year fixture lifespan with minimal maintenance.

Why Climate Performance Is a Legitimate Concern
Tennessee summers run hot and humid. Alabama coastal areas see thunderstorms multiple times per week through July and August. Ohio winters drop below freezing for weeks and bring ice storms. Spring across the Tennessee Valley and the Ohio River Valley brings severe thunderstorms with damaging winds.
Older generation permanent lighting products (early 2010s vintage) did have failure rates that justified the question — some systems lost 10 to 15 percent of fixtures within 5 years to moisture intrusion, UV damage, or temperature cycling. Industry quality has improved substantially since then. The systems we install in 2026 are engineered to a different standard.
How the System Handles Each Environmental Stress
Humidity & Moisture
Average summer humidity across our service area runs 65–90%. Our fixtures are rated IP67 — dust-tight and immersion-proof to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Wiring connections use inline waterproof connectors with double O-ring seals. The cabinet is rated NEMA 4X (watertight and corrosion-resistant). Long-term testing shows IP67 fixtures retaining full function after 5,000 hours at 95% humidity and 105°F — roughly equivalent to 25 years of typical southern summer exposure.
Temperature Cycling
Our service area swings from -5°F (Ohio polar vortex) to 105°F (peak summer). The polycarbonate track is rated from -40°F to 250°F; anodized aluminum is rated even wider. LED fixtures operate from -30°F to 130°F with heat sinks sized for sustained high-ambient operation. Controller cabinets are rated for sustained 130°F internal temperature and mounted on shaded or north-facing walls when possible.
Thunderstorms & High Wind
Our service area averages 50–65 thunderstorm days per year with gusts of 60–80 mph and occasional tropical-storm-force winds in coastal Alabama. Track and fixtures are tested to 110 mph sustained wind loads. Track is fastened with stainless steel screws on 24-inch centers; fixtures snap into positive-lock track geometry. Lightning risk is minimized by the 12V/24V DC isolation from line voltage — we also recommend surge protection at the controller circuit.
UV Exposure & Color Stability
Tennessee and Alabama receive among the highest UV index readings in the eastern US. Our track uses carbon-black or cerium-based UV inhibitors, retaining over 90% of mechanical properties after 10 years of full UV exposure. Aluminum track is essentially UV-immune. We use silicone lenses rather than polycarbonate to prevent yellowing. Current-generation LEDs hold chromaticity within ±0.003 over a 50,000-hour life — including stable red output that early systems could not maintain.
Winter Performance in Ohio Markets
Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton installations face sustained sub-freezing temperatures, ice loading, snow accumulation, and road salt spray that Tennessee and Alabama markets do not see at the same severity.
Sub-Freezing Operation
LED fixtures and controllers operate fine at sub-zero temperatures. Polycarbonate track is rated to -40°F. Fixtures dissipate enough heat during operation to keep their own ambient slightly above surrounding air temperature.
Ice Loading
Track installed in the gutter line shadow accumulates less ice than gutters. Fixtures snap in with the lens facing down or laterally, shedding ice naturally. Severe ice events can occasionally damage brackets — the track is repairable on a section-by-section basis.
Salt Spray
Salt accumulation near treated roads is cosmetic rather than functional and rinses off with the first spring rain. Aluminum track in salt-spray environments benefits from an annual rinse during spring cleaning to remove residue.
The Realistic 10-Year Picture
Based on systems we have in the field today, here is what a typical residential install across our service area looks like over time.
Years 1–3
Essentially zero issues. The system performs as installed. Software updates to the controller over the air, but no physical service required.
Years 4–6
Occasional individual LED replacement — typically 1 to 2 percent of fixtures. Replacements are quick: pop the failed fixture out of the track, snap a new one in, recalibrate the controller. A service visit takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Years 7–10
Cumulative fixture replacements reach 3 to 5 percent. Controllers reach their typical replacement window around year 10 to 12. A controller replacement is a half-day service visit.
Years 10–15
Track inspection for UV degradation or mechanical wear. Brackets on south-facing rooflines may need replacement. LED fixtures themselves continue performing within tolerance.
Years 15–25
Approaching the end of useful life for original fixtures. LED technology advances significantly over this period — many homeowners choose to upgrade the entire system to current generation rather than continue replacing individual fixtures.
Care and Maintenance Recommendations
Annual Visual Inspection
Walk the perimeter of the home each spring and look up at the track. Note any visible damage, missing fixtures, or track sections that appear to have shifted. Most years no issues are visible.
Cleaning Every 2–3 Years
A gentle garden hose rinse at low pressure aimed up at the track removes pollen, dust, and residue. Avoid pressure washing the system directly — fixtures handle the water but pressure can disturb track seating.
Storm Damage Assessment
After any severe storm or hail event, visually inspect the track and fixtures. Photograph any visible damage. Contact us before submitting an insurance claim — we can provide documentation to support the claim.
