Your Guide to Enjoying Christmas Lights in Huntsville

Huntsville does the holidays with the same enthusiasm it brings to everything else, and the season here is anchored by one of the best known light displays in Alabama. Here is how to plan your evenings, plus what to know before you go.

Galaxy of Lights at the Huntsville Botanical Garden

Galaxy of Lights is the centerpiece of the season in Huntsville and has been a local tradition for about three decades. The Botanical Garden fills with animated light displays along a route that runs well over two miles, with everything from traditional holiday scenes to nursery rhyme characters to displays that could only come from this city, rockets included.

The best part is that it runs two ways. Driving nights let you see the whole route from a warm car, which is the right call with small children or on a cold evening. Walking nights let you move at your own pace and get close to the displays. Walking nights typically use timed tickets that should be purchased ahead. The Garden is on Bob Wallace Avenue, and its official site carries this season’s dates, hours and ticket details.

Downtown and the Square

Downtown Huntsville lights up for the season, and the area around the courthouse square and the entertainment districts is worth walking rather than driving. Tree lightings, markets and outdoor events run from late November through December.

Because the schedule changes yearly, a local events calendar in mid November is the most reliable planning tool. Many of the best evenings downtown are one night events rather than season long ones.

The Neighborhood Drive

Huntsville has strong residential displays, and the established neighborhoods with mature trees and deeper lots consistently produce the best streets. Southeast Huntsville and the older areas near the mountain are reliable starting points, and Madison has blocks where participation runs high.

Ask locally in early December. Neighborhood social pages fill with recommendations as soon as displays go up, and those lists are always more current than anything published in advance.

Weeknights beat weekends by a wide margin. The routes are the same and the traffic is not.

Practical Tips for the Season

Buy timed tickets early for anything that uses them. Peak weekends sell out, and the week before Christmas is the hardest night to get.

Go earlier in the season than you think you need to. The first two weeks after displays open are noticeably calmer than the final stretch, and the lights are exactly the same.

For driving routes, fill the tank and bring hot drinks. For walking routes, dress a layer warmer than the forecast, because standing still outdoors in December is colder than it sounds.

Make Your Home Worth the Detour

The houses people drive across town to see are almost never accidents. They are designed, fitted to the architecture, and installed with product built to survive a season outdoors.
